Northwestern junior cornerback Keith Watkins II will miss the 2016 season after suffering a left knee injury during practice last week, coach Pat Fitzgerald said.

The injury was suffered during a non-contact drill and will require surgery.

“I’m really disappointed for him,” Fitzgerald said. “He’s worked so hard, but we’ve got great depth at that position. I’m excited for the guys who now get that opportunity from somebody else’s tough situation. That’s football.”

Watkins started two games last season and appeared in all 12 contests. He was slated to be the starter this season.

Montre Hartage, Trae Williams and Alonzo Mayo are among the players competing for Watkins’ spot.

The Wildcats open the season Sept. 3 against Western Michigan.
